Yury V. Sukhov

Hero of the Soviet Union (1976), honoured test-pilot of the USSR (1963), colonel (1960).

Yury Sukhov was born on April 22, 1923 in Moscow. In 1940 he finished 10 classes of school.

Since July 1940 Yury Sukhov was in the army. Yury Sukhov was taking classes in Mikhaylovka Military aviation school for pilots, in 1941 he graduated from Voroshilovgrad Military aviation school for pilots and in 1942 - from Krasnodar military aviation school. He was the flight commander of the 11th reserve air regiment.

Yury Sukhov was a participant of the Great Patriotic War: from April 1944 to May 1945 he was the flight commander of the 452nd bomber regiment. Yury Sukhov took part in fights at the 2nd Ukrainian front. He took part in Jassy–Kishinev Operation, in liberation of Hungary and Czechoslovakia. In total, Yury Sukhov has performed 59 combat flights on Pe-2 bomber. After the war he continued his service in combatant forces of the Air Force.

From August 1948 to December 1963 Yury Sukhov was a test-pilot of the State Air Force research and test institute (department № 2). He has performed state tests of Tu-16 (1954), 3ME (1959), 3MD (1960), Tu-22B (1960-1961), tests of air refuelling system on Tu-22RD. Since December 1963 he was reserved.

From January 1964 to 1980 Yury Sukhov was a test-pilot of Tupolev design bureau. He has lifted in the sky (on October 3, 1968) and carried out tests of Tu-154 jet passenger airplane. He took part in tests of air refuelling system of Tu-16 and Tu-95, tests of Tu-22, Tu-124, Tu-134 and their modifications.

Yury Sukhov lived in the village of Chkalovsky (within the city of Shchyolkovo) of the Moscow region. He worked as a leading engineer in Tupolev design bureau (after leaving his flight-test work).

Yury Sukhov died on May 6, 1994. He was buried in the village of Leonikha of the Shchyolkovo district.

Yury Sukhov was awarded two Orders of Lenin (1955, 1976), Order of the Red Banner (1945), two Orders of the Patriotic War of the 1st class (1945, 1985), Orders of the Red Banner of Labour, Order of the Red Star, medals.
