Yury P. Sheffer

Hero of the Russian Federation (1998), honoured test-pilot of the USSR (1990), major (1988).

Yury Sheffer was born on June 30, 1947 in the city of Chelyabinsk. In 1965 he finished 10 classes of school. Later he worked at TsAGI as an electrical fitter. In 1966 he graduated from Chelyabinsk aero club.

Since 1967 Yury Sheffer was in the army. In 1970 he graduated from Kacha Higher Military aviation school for pilots and stayed there as a flight instructor. Since 1975 Yury Sheffer was reserved.

In 1977 Yury Sheffer graduated from the Test-Pilot School, and in 1980 - from Moscow Aviation Institute.

From June 1977 to December 1985 Yury Sheffer was a test-pilot of Tupolev design bureau. He has performed tests of cruise missiles and weapon system on Tu-95MS; special tests of Tu-22M2 and Tu-22M3 with missile armament system; tests of operation-tactical laser reconnaissance systems on Tu-22M2 flying laboratory; tests for expansion of the minimal flight speed range of Tu-134 and Tu-154's flight envelope and their range of operational angles of attack. He also took part in tests of Tu-144D airplane.

Since January 1986 Yury Sheffer was a test-pilot of the Flight Research Institute n.a. M.M. Gromov. He also took part in tests of Tu-144LL, MAI-89, Be-200 airplane. He has performed flight tests of Tu-154LL flying laboratory with an experimental side-stick and a number of test works on MiG-29, Il-76, Tu-154.

In 2000 Yury Sheffer established 12 world aviation records of climb rate on Be-200 hydroplane as the second pilot.

In 1986-2001 Yury Sheffer was a test-cosmonaut of the Complex for Training of Test-Cosmonauts. In 1987 Yury Sheffer graduated from the Reserch & Test Training Center. He has got thorough training for the pilots of the "Buran" space shuttle orbiter during which he had performed maturation of manual control system and automatic landing system on Su-7U, Su-17M, MiG-21UM, MiG-25PU, MiG-25RBK, MiG-31, Tu-154LL, Il-62. During the tests he was the first to perform landing of Tu-22M2 with engines off imitating the approach descent profile of the "Buran".

Yury Sheffer lived in the city of Zhukovsky of the Moscow region. He died on June 5, 2001. He was buried at the Bykovskoe cemetery in Zhukovsky.

Yury Sheffer was awarded the Order "For personal courage"(1992) and medals.

In the city of Zhukovsky there is a memorial board on the wall of the house, where the Hero lived.
