Tu-154 is a medium-range passenger aircraft. Development of the aircraft in Tupolev Experimental Design Bureau began in 1963. It was aimed at achievement of maximum economic operating efficiency for the airplane of this class.

First flight was made on October 3, 1968 by test-pilot U.V. Suhov. First production airplane took off in 1970, and the same year, serial production of Tu-154A aircraft, with maximum takeoff weight of 94 tons, began. First regular flight with passengers was made on February 9, 1972. In the end of 1975, Tu-154B modification with maximum takeoff weight of 98 tons was developed. The airplane was manufactured by Kuibyshev Aviation Plant, which is now Aviacor - Aviation Plant CJSC in the city of Samara. In total, 930 Tu-154 aircraft were built.

Main modifications of the airplane are: Tu-154, Tu-154A, Tu-154B and Tu-154M. Tu-154B is equipped with common avionics complex that uses electromechanical indicating devices. The flight complex of the aircraft includes АБСУ-154-2 Automated Flight Control System.

Tu-154B can land in weather conditions according to the ICAO category II. Perceivable noise characteristics, generated by Tu-154B, comply with ICAO Chapter 2 requirements.

An upgraded Tu-154M modification with D-30KU engine was created on the base of Tu-154B. Its main advantage is fuel efficiency. Tu-154M aircraft are in use since 1986. Perceivable noise characteristics, generated by Tu-154M, comply with ICAO Chapter 3 requirements. The last modification, Tu-154M, significantly exceeds first Tu-154 modifications by its flight performance and economic efficiency.   First production airplane Tu-154M took off on July 16, 1984 and soon it was put into serial production. Tu-154 aircraft were extensively operated abroad, with 166 planes of different modifications delivered (98 Tu-154M among them), in total. In its day, Tu-154M was in great demand at the after-market of the far-abroad countries. A modernization program was developed for Tu-154M fleet, currently in operation.

The flight complex of Tu-154M complies with all current and advanced ICAO and EUROCONTROL requirements and includes satellite navigation system, coupled with АБСУ AFCS, Traffic Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), Terrain Awareness and Warning System (TAWS), ВБЭ-СВС (ВБЭ-2А) altimeter equipment with БСКА-Э1 units.
